A Garden of Sustainability

The WaterAid Garden highlighted the pressing issues of climate change and sustainable water management. It utilized reclaimed and repurposed materials to minimize its carbon footprint.

The garden’s diverse plant species were chosen for their ability to thrive under varying rainfall conditions, offering a vibrant and practical solution to water-related challenges in gardening.

Salama shared his insights:

“The WaterAid garden explored the challenges presented by an ever-changing climate. It focused on sustainable water management, used materials that are reclaimed and repurposed for a lighter carbon footprint, and featured a colourful array of plant species designed to deal with varying amounts of rainfall. It was an incredible experience, and I learnt a lot about sustainability that will inform my work at Yorkshire Garden Centres. To be involved in the build of an RHS Chelsea Flower Show garden was an honour in itself, but for it to win a Gold Medal was fantastic.”

Bringing Expertise Back Home

With a renewed perspective on sustainable practices, Salama plans to integrate these learnings into his role at Yorkshire Garden Centres. His responsibilities include visiting growers, forging relationships with suppliers, and sourcing an array of plants that inspire customers to cultivate beautiful, sustainable gardens. His work spans multiple locations including Tong, Tingley, Otley, Bingley, and Dean’s Garden Centres in York and Scarborough.

The relocation of the WaterAid Garden to a public space in the north of England ensures that its message of sustainability and innovative design will continue to inspire and educate the community.
